How Do I Prepare My RV for Storage?
New RV owners often ask what they should do to prepare to store their recreational vehicle for the off-season. We've put together a handy list of recommendations to ensure your RV is properly winterized before you park it at Settle Self Storage Center of Shelby.
Winterized Plumbing
- Drain the fresh, grey and black water tanks. Also give the black tank a proper flushing to prevent any residue buildup.
- Remove the drain plug to empty the water heater, then turn the water heater bypass valve to the winter setting so antifreeze doesn't fill the tank.
- Open the low-point drains to let out standing water. You can use an air compressor to push residual water out of the lines. Make sure all the lines are cleared.
- Pump RV-specific antifreeze through all the faucets, the shower, and the toilet.
- Leave a small amount of water in the toilet bowl. This will act as a vapor barrier to help block black tank odors during long storage periods.
Pest Control
- Clear out all the food. This includes all dry goods, perishables, and pantry items. Remember, most rodents can chew through cardboard and plastic.
- Clean out the fridge, and defrost your freezer. Wipe down the insides with a mild cleaner, and place a box of baking soda inside.
- Prop the fridge and freezer doors slightly open during storage to prevent mildew buildup.
- Place a moisture absorber or a small dehumidifier inside to prevent mold buildup.
- Seal up the vehicle. Check for any gaps, holes, or exterior vents, and stop them up using pest screens or steel wool. You don't want small animals using your vehicle as a safe nesting space!
Exterior Preparations
- Wash the exterior thoroughly to get rid of any road grime, salt, or bugs. Afterward, apply a high-quality RV wax to protect the exterior from any harsh weather while it's parked.
- Wash your tires. Get them inflated to the maximum recommended pressure.
- Inspect the roof, checking all seams, vents, and window frames for cracked caulking. Re-seal anything that looks worn or cracked to prevent any leaks.
- Close and lock everything, including storage compartments, windows, and vents. If you have a travel trailer, consider getting a heavy-duty hitch lock.
- Do not lower your stabilizer jacks all the way to the ground. Tires can lose pressure over the winter, resulting in the full weight of the RV coming to rest on the jacks, damaging them.
- Consider covering it up! Investing in a cover for your RV can help to better protect it from the elements during long term storage.
Battery Care
- Either connect the RV to shore power to keep the batteries maintained, or disconnect and remove them entirely.
- If removed, be sure to store your battery in a cool, dry place, and make use of a trickle charger to maintain it while it's not being used.
What If I'm Storing a Different Vehicle?
Good news! Most vehicles require very similar winterizing and storage prep, so the above guide should broadly apply no matter what you're parking. Even if you're storing a boat or other seasonal vehicle, you should make sure your pipes are flushed, your vehicle has been provided with appropriate anti-freeze, the battery is removed and stored, and that it has been cleaned, sealed and secured, and covered up.
